GRANTEE, PROJECT REPORT WINNER6

Mark Jeevaratnam is a freelance documentary filmmaker and one of five grand-prize winners of Project: Report 2010.  His work for the Pulitzer Center began with The Smile of Commons, a short vignette that introduces the world to Sharon Hill, a spirited and caring employee of Davidson College Dining Services who is known for her "smilie-face" signatures on sandwiches.  He then examined coal-culture and mountaintop-removal coal-mining in Harlan County, Kentucky in For Higher Ground, a piece that highlights an uplifting community theatre group that is uniting people and igniting a dialogue on issues that threaten to divide this front-porch community.

Mark is a graduate of Davidson College with a degree in economics.  His passion for film was sparked when he spent the summer of 2009 in the Philippines where he filmed and produced The Journey Beyond Me, a film that examines overseas labor migration, remittances, and their effects on family culture and dynamic.
