Maria Nasir is a student contributor to The 1619 Project Law School Initiative. She is currently in her last year pursuing her J.D. degree at Howard University School of Law. She hopes to focus her work on immigration and human and civil rights law. She obtained her bachelor’s in English, with minors in information technology and graphic design, from George Mason University. She participated in a study-abroad program with her school to South Africa to take classes and intern with the Judicial Inspectorate of Correctional Services and worked as a student attorney at the Human and Civil Rights Clinic with the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless and CASA de Maryland, Inc. This past summer, she built her experience with Al Otro Lado, the Democratic National Committee, and the Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center. In her spare time, she loves to read, write, and spend time with her friends and family. She hopes to lend her time and skills to public service in line with Charles Hamilton Houston's vision of social engineering.
