Joe Wheeler

GRANTEE

Joe Wheeler works at the intersection of design, journalism, and social impact, specializing in interactive, participatory, and immersive storytelling, data visualization, and visual narrative. He leverages his background in human-centered design to help journalists, documentary filmmakers, and nonprofits tell stories that matter in new and engaging ways.

In 2015 he won MTV's Look Different Challenge with the design of LookDeeper.org, a micro-story sharing platform for millennials to share and discuss stories about bias. He was a lead designer for THE DIG, an interactive documentary exploring the future of relationships which won a World Press Photo Award in 2017 for Immersive Storytelling. He is a co-founder of What Went Wrong?, a participatory journalism project mapping failed foreign aid projects across Africa, which received an investigative data-journalism grant from CodeforAfrica's ImpactAFRICA in 2017, as well as a grant from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting in 2018.

Joe received a Master of Fine Arts in Transdisciplinary Design Strategies from Parson School of Design.
