In Maniema, the Clorophora species known locally as mufula is used to make furniture and build houses. Mufula is overexploited in the forests of the Kibombo and Kasongo territories. This situation is at the root of heavy deforestation, according to the report of the Provincial Environment Division.

If nothing is done, this species risks disappearing completely, a situation that will result in a loss of income for the state and local communities. Grâce Mbambi and Modeste Shabani conducted an investigation with the support of the Rainforest Journalism Fund and the Pulitzer Center.
