Tom Gjelten

Tom Gjelten is now a correspondent on Religion and Belief at NPR. During his career as a journalist, he has covered stories in Central and South America, the first Gulf War, the wars in the former Yugoslavia, and the transitions to democracy in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. He reported live from the Pentagon when it was hit on September, 11, 2001, and was NPR's lead Pentagon reporter during the early war in Afghanistan and the invasion of Iraq.

Gjelten has written two books, "Sarajevo Daily: A City and Its Newspaper Under Siege" and "Bacardi and the Long Fight for Cuba: The Biography of a Cause", that received praise from outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The San Francisco Chronicle, and The Kansas City Star.

Since 1982, he has won multiple awards such as two Overseas Press Club Awards, a George Polk Award, and a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award. To read his full biography, click here.
