WHERE WE REPORT

Abid Bhat

GRANTEE

Fifteen years ago, back when 9/11 was still creating a new perceptive order and war on Kashmir's trouble-torn landscape, Abid Bhat began his career as a photojournalist in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir.

15 years later, he has already captured news pictures and done features on conflict and politics, human rights and security, religion and diversity, health and education, environment and wildlife, disasters, gender, and sports.

He covered 2009 and 2014 regional elections and was at the vanguard during the 2014 floods of biblical proportion—capturing the pain and plight of the people during the disaster in the region.

Bhat has been a regular contributing photographer with various international publications like the BBC, The Independent, Al Jazeera, Harper's Magazine, Roads & Kingdoms, Photoshot, and Indian publications like India Today, Fountain Ink, Live Mint, Open Magazine, Dainik Bhaskar, The Sunday Indian and Srinagar-based publications like Rising Kashmir, and Kashmir Observer.

A commerce graduate, Bhat is well versed with multimedia platforms and is trained in use of applications busting fake news, photos and videos.

His photo exhibitions on Kashmir have been well received. Bhat has also held workshops with young photojournalists and journalism students.

As a photojournalist working on ground, Bhat can understand the diverse dialects in the region. He knows the pulse of the people in Kashmir and is well-versed with the otherwise unpredictable and fragile Kashmir situation.
