David M. Barreda

GRANTEE

David M. Barreda is a photo editor at National Geographic and based in Oakland, California. He is a core team member of Diversify Photo, a collective of photographers and photo editors of color dedicated to advancing diversity in the field.

Previously, he was a photo editor for Earthjustice, a nonprofit public interest organization dedicated to litigating environmental issues, a founding visuals editor for Topic, an award-winning digital magazine dedicated to visual storytelling, and for ChinaFile, where he launched the Abigail Cohen Fellowship in Documentary Photography in collaboration with the Magnum Foundation.

Prior to being a photo editor, he was a staff photojournalist at the San Jose Mercury News, the Rocky Mountain News (Colorado), the Valley News (New Hampshire), the Tallahassee Democrat (Florida), and The Herald of Randolph (Vermont).
