SECTIONS

Warm-up: What is a refugee? What do children who are refugees experience?

Class-wide reading and discussion: Explore how children living in a refugee camp in Kenya go to school.

Group reading and discussion: In groups, students learn about the lives of children living in uncertain conditions in Bangladesh or Mexico, and draw comparisons between their lives, and the stories they've read.

Reflection and conclusions: How are the stories similar? How are they different? What have students learned about these students' hopes and dreams, and how do they compare to theirs?

Extension Activities:

Journalism Project: Students follow journalist Jaime Joyce's process and write a story about recently arrived refugees and migrants in their community.

Letter-writing: Students write letters urging elected officials to take action based on the challenges they read about.

Picture book or graphic novel: Students illustrate and narrate a depiction of what life is like for children who are refugees.
