The Story of the Encroachers who are now Rangers in Mount Leuser National Park

These stories will highlight efforts to restore forest areas from the perspective of a former forest encroacher who is now a forest recovery actor. He is a forest ranger who still supports his family using the forest area that was once misused. Most importantly, these efforts seek to encourage an acceleration of forest restoration.

Gunung Leuser National Park is one of the buffer forests of the Sumatran rainforest in Indonesia. According to data from 2019, 450,000 hectares (1.1 million acres) of its ecosystem have been deforested, leaving 1.8 hectares (4.4 million acres) total in the Leuser area. Deforestation occurs due to the development of forest areas into oil palm plantations and illegal logging by the community.
