Alessandro Pavone

VIDEOGRAPHER

Italian-born Alessandro Pavone has been working as a freelance director of photography and producer in current affairs and documentary programming for the past 10 years.

After leaving his country, Pavone began freelancing in London for independent production companies overseeing the production of various documentary programs including the BBC "Shroud of Turin: Material Evidence." Based in Kabul and then in Istanbul from 2011 to 2015, Pavone has filmed conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. From 2011-2013, he was on the frontline for NATO's news desk in Afghanistan. Highlights included exclusive access to the Afghan Army to cover night raids by special forces—this story was featured on Al Jazeera News' special coverage. Beyond the Middle East and Afghanistan, Pavone has also covered recent terror attacks in Paris and Brussels and climate change in Greenland and in Somalia. In 2017, he filmed and produced for the PBS NewsHour a series of news feature stories funded by the Pulitzer Center on ethnic violence in South Sudan.

Pavone was also part of the PBS NewsHour team to receive the 2017 Overseas Press Club citation (honourable mention) in the Edward R. Murrow Award for their "The Fight for Iraq" series.
