Dr. Brenda C. Williams is a retired primary care physician from Savannah, Georgia. In 1982, Dr. Williams and her husband, Dr. Joseph Williams, opened the Excelsior Medical Clinic in Sumter, South Carolina, running the practice for 32 years until 2004. Both Dr. Williams are active in community affairs and soon after retirement established The Family Unit, an organization focused on improving the living conditions of impoverished people in Sumter. Inspired by President Barack Obama in 2008, Dr. Brenda Williams and members of the Family Unit, Inc. started registering people to vote in mobile home parks, low-income housing projects, and at the local jail. She's been featured in local and national press for her work on voting rights.
