Carly Gist

Carly Gist is a journalist, editor, and student from southwestern Indiana. She is in her third year at Southern Illinois University, majoring in journalism with a specialization in news editorial and a minor in English. She plans to graduate in May 2027.
Gist began her journalism career as a staff reporter for SIU’s The Daily Egyptian in Fall 2023. Since then, she has covered a multitude of topics, from local news, investigations, and politics to arts, entertainment, and opinion. She currently serves as the newsroom’s deputy editor and will transition to editor-in-chief in the spring.
As a fellow for the Saluki Local Reporting Lab, Gist has produced multiple long-term projects that have appeared in Capitol News Illinois and other local and state publications. Gist is also a stringer for The New York Times, where she contributes reporting from southern Illinois and surrounding areas as needed, and was a fellow for the 2025 RIAS Berlin Commission ERP Student Program.
Gist is currently working with a team of student reporters on a Pulitzer Center-supported series for the Gateway Journalism Review, titled The Speech We Hate. The series explores First Amendment disputes across the Midwest.
