Mike Tony

Mike Tony is a reporter at the Charleston Gazette-Mail in West Virginia, where he focuses on the environment and energy, as well as investigative work on other subjects.
Tony previously was an enterprise and investigative reporter for the Uniontown (Pennsylvania) Herald-Standard, his hometown newspaper.
He has produced award-winning, in-depth reporting on environmental health, federal and state government accountability, and the opioid epidemic, among other topics.
The University of Pennsylvania graduate was a 2025 National Press Foundation Federal Action, Local Impact Journalism fellow; a 2025 Columbia University Energy Journalism fellow; and a 2023 MIT Environmental Solutions Journalism fellow.
In addition, Tony was one of the recipients of a 2024 National Academies Eric and Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science Communications.
