Alvaro Ortiz

Álvaro Ortiz is the founder of Populate, a product design studio focused on civic engagement. Among other projects, Populate created the Panama Papers website and Offshore Leaks searchable database for the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), and they are launching Gobierto, a set of tools to help public bodies improve transparency and citizen participation.
Before founding Populate, Álvaro led the marketing team for renowned digital mapping service CartoDB; created Mumumío (direct-to-consumer food marketplace in Spain); co-founded Actuable (an online petition site that was bought by Change.org after growing to 1M members in less than a year); co-founded the biggest-to-date open data Hackathon in Spain; founded a popular Spanish-speaking blogging community; and was partner of The Cocktail, the top Spanish UX consultancy.
He participated in activist and free software adventures as Interactors, Otra Democracia Es Posible and Desde América Con Amor (an experimental journalism project in 2003). He participates in several startups as advisor and business angel.
