GRANTEE

Augustina Armstrong-Ogbonna is a Nigerian multimedia freelance journalist who has covered politics, maritime issues, and human-interest stories.

Over the past six years, she has produced stories on the environment, climate change, and human rights issues affecting the poor in underreported communities of Nigeria's economic capital, Lagos.

Her passion for climate change and community reporting was ignited in 2011, after being selected as one of five young African journalists to travel by road across six African countries ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Summit in Durban, South Africa.

A media fellowship organized by the UNDP, titled "On The Road To Baobab," challenged Augustina to return to Nigeria and continue reporting about the impact of climate change in different communities in Lagos.

She has undergone journalism training both within Africa and beyond. In 2012, she was a Bootcamp Fellow on Energy and Climate Change in the Knight Science Journalism program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Augustina is a recipient of several fellowships and awards, including the 2015 United Nations Foundation Gold Prize in Development and Humanitarian Reporting, organized by the United Nations Correspondent Award in New York.

She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology and currently is studying at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where she aims to earn a Masters of Arts in Science Journalism with a specialization in environment reporting and sustainable development.
