Alissa Quart

Alissa Quart is the executive director of the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, a journalism non-profit which has an initiative devoted to documentary poetry. She is also the author of five nonfiction books and two books of poetry. These include the acclaimed Squeezed: Why Our Families Can’t Afford America(Ecco/HarperCollins, 2018) and Branded: The Buying and Selling of Teenagers (Basic Books, 2004) as well as two books of poetry, much of it with journalistic elements, Monetized (Miami University Press, 2015) and Thoughts and Prayers (O/R Books, 2019). Her latest book, Bootstrapped: Liberating Ourselves From the Self-Made Myth, is forthcoming from Ecco in 2022.
Quart contributes journalism to The New York Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post, The New York Review of Books, and many other publications. Her poetry has appeared in The Nation, NPR, Teen Vogue, The Daily Beast, and elsewhere. She won an Emmy for executive producing the documentary Jackson and she has taught at Brown University and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where she was Alumna of the Year in 2018.
