Amit Madheshiya

Amit Madheshiya is a World Press Photo and Cannes prize-winning filmmaker and photographer. His work is supported by the Sundance Institute, MacArthur Foundation, The New York Times, The Guardian, Field of Vision, IDFA Bertha Fund, Catapult Film Fund, Arts Council of England, and the BBC. He has been a fellow of the Sundance Labs, Cluster of Excellence Heidelberg, India Foundation for the Arts, and Goethe-Institut. Amit is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The Cinema Travellers, co-directed with Shirley Abraham, is his debut film. It premiered as the only Indian film playing the Official Selection at Cannes Film Festival 2016. It won the Special Jury Prize for L’Oeil d’or: Le Prix du documentaire. The film has since played 125 festivals, and won nineteen awards globally, including the President’s Medal in India. He has also directed Searching for Saraswati (The New York Times) and The Hour of Lynching (The Guardian).
For his photography work, Amit has won the World Press Photo (2008, 2020) and World Photography Award (2008, 2010). His photographs have been shown in solo and group exhibitions worldwide.
