Caryle Murphy

Caryle Murphy, a former reporter for the Washington Post, is an independent journalist based in Washington, DC. After leaving the Post in 2006, she spent three years in Saudi Arabia, where she worked as a freelance journalist reporting for GlobalPost, the Christian Science Monitor and the National in Abu Dhabi.
From 2011-2012 she was a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, where she researched and wrote her latest book, A Kingdom's Future: Saudi Arabia Through the Eyes of its Twentysomethings (2013). Her first book, Passion for Islam (2002), explained Islam's contemporary revival and the roots of religious extremism in the Middle East as seen through the eyes of Egyptians. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting and the George Polk Award for Foreign Reporting for her coverage of of Iraqi-occupied Kuwait and the 1990-91 Gulf War.
A Massachusetts native, she is a graduate of Trinity University in Washington, D.C. and Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies.
