CHIEF ENGAGEMENT AND EDUCATION OFFICER
Flora works as the Chief of Education and Engagement, leading engagement and education programs and teams in the US, Latin America, Central Africa, and Southeast Asia, combining investigative journalism, social movement expertise, and academic perspectives to raise public awareness of social inequalities and environmental degradation.
She is a specialist in research, education, and strategic communication, mainly focusing on social and environmental issues. Before joining the Center, she worked at Dialogo Brasil/Climate Land Use Alliance, where she was responsible for coordinating multi-disciplinary teams. She created and led a 2-year Learning Journey with 21 civil society, media, and indigenous organizations to develop their audience-centered communication strategies and managed highly interdisciplinary research, educational, and influencers projects seeking to create public support for forest conservation and traditional people rights, including a nationally representative survey on public knowledge, risk perceptions, policy preferences, and behavior regarding climate change, deforestation, and land rights.
Previous to CLUA, she was Head of Afreaka, an awarded Brazilian media and education non-profit organization focused on promoting awareness of African issues and transforming innovative African-focused media content into art festivals and exhibitions, training courses for elementary and high school teachers, K12 educational books and media and university courses. Flora has worked for different United Nations Organizations such as FAO, UNICEF, and UNEP. In the latter, she led and developed the public information and education strategy, the UN Environmental Rights Initiative, and the UN Environment’s Environmental Education and Youth Alliance implementation in Brazil.
Flora is a Ph.D. Candidate at the Faculty of Economics of Coimbra University in the Postcolonialisms and Global Citizenship Doctoral Programme. Researches southern feminist ontologies and epistemologies related to climate, environment, and land through the lens of postcolonial critique and political ecology. Member of the Ecology and Society Lab at CES, she holds a Master's degree from the University of Brasilia in Development, Society and International Cooperation, and a Laurea Magistrale through the program ´Bilateral Agreement´ in Communication and Philosophy from the Roma Tre University.
