Frances D’Emilio

Six years after joining the AP in San Francisco, Frances D'Emilio was posted in Rome in 1985 as a foreign correspondent. She has reported on everything from the dramatic crisis of trafficked migrants and the country's struggles to safeguard its artistic, architectural and archaeological treasures to corruption scandals that toppled a post-war political class and the current rise of populism. She has also specialized in investigating organized crime. She's interviewed Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi in his underground bunker, three-time premier Silvio Berlusconi in his swank Rome palazzo and traveled with popes from rural Eastern Europe to the southern tip of South America.
