Francisco Seco, from the Canary Islands, Spain, is a self-taught news photographer based in Istanbul, Turkey.
Seco earned a bachelor of sociology degree from the University of A Coruña in Spain in 2000. He started his professional career in Madrid in 2004 and worked for several national newspapers before moving to Lisbon, Portugal, in 2010 to start freelancing for the Associated Press.
Seco joined the AP Brussels team in Belgium in 2018, and has been the AP’s chief photographer in Turkey since 2021.
He has covered sports, politics, war, natural disaster, daily life, migration, financial crisis, and social and cultural events. He has also covered Japan and China, the Olympics, the war in Ukraine, the World Cup, the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy and Belgium, and the 2023 earthquake in Turkey.
