Maria Mast

Maria Mast is a reporter and editor at Zeit Online, based in Berlin. She frequently reports on climate issues, the science behind them, and their impact on human life.
As a journalist, she wants to make these complex connections easy to understand. She has created numerous data projects for Zeit Online about various topics, including rising temperatures in Germany, forest fires in Australia, and melting glaciers in Greenland.
In March 2020, a fellowship took her to Budapest to report on climate and energy issues in Hungary. During the coronavirus crisis, she reported on the fundamental research that suddenly governed the daily lives of people around the world.
Mast speaks German, English, Spanish, and French and studied German literature and linguistics in Heidelberg, Germany; Barcelona; and Salamanca, Spain, with a focus on teaching.
She holds a doctorate in linguistics from the University of Heidelberg, where she wrote about the media discourse on Spanish and German cultural specifics.
