Charting Conflict and Corruption — Uganda and the DRC

Author:

A volcanic eruption in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda’s illicit gold trade, and the construction of an oil pipeline running from Lake Albert to the Indian Ocean appear unrelated, but each raises thorny questions about exactly who stands to lose and who will benefit from natural resources in Africa’s Great Lakes region.

This project explores the devastating impacts of the eruption of Mount Nyiragongo in Goma, displacement along the 900-mile East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline, and how gold laundering in Uganda fuels regional unrest, while examining the links among resource exploitation, conflict, and corruption.
