Jackie Spinner

Jackie Spinner is an associate professor of journalism at Columbia College Chicago and a correspondent for Columbia Journalism Review.

She was a staff writer for The Washington Post for 14 years and covered the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. After leaving the Post in 2009, she founded an international literacy project in Belize, Central America. In 2010, she returned to the Middle East and started the award-winning AUI-S Voice at The American University of Iraq, the country's first independent student newspaper.

She was a U.S. Fulbright Scholar in Oman in 2010-11 and founded Al Mir'ah, the first independent student newspaper at Sultan Qaboos University. She is the author of "Tell Them I Didn't Cry: A young journalist's story of joy, loss and survival in Iraq" (Scribner 2006). She is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, Journalism and Women's Symposium, the Online News Association and the Illinois Press Photographers Association.

Jackie lives in Chicago with her two Moroccan-born sons.
