In Kalamba (the second largest city in Kapanga territory, Lualaba Province), farmers are overexploiting gallery forests in the hope of improving cash crops such as beans and maize. The savannah soils are no longer producing, and the prospects for the people are poor. Without the forests, however, the rains are not reliable and harvests, even in forest lands, become unlikely.
