Sammy Fretwell

Sammy Fretwell is an environment writer for The State, a McClatchy newspaper, in Columbia, South Carolina. His duties include covering the unfolding story of climate change, as well as energy, state environmental policy, wildlife and nature, and coastal development.

Fretwell is a University of South Carolina graduate who grew up in Anderson County, South Carolina.

He has been recognized by an array of journalism organizations. They include the Society of Professional Journalists, the Society of Environmental Journalists, the National Headliner Awards, the Scripps Howard Foundation, and the SC Press Association. Also, he was named Journalist of the Year for 2017 by the state Press Association.
