Julia O’Malley

GRANTEE

Julia O'Malley is a freelance journalist who writes about Alaska culture, people, politics, food and the environment.

Julia began her freelance career in 2014. Before that she worked for the Anchorage Daily News, Alaska's largest newspaper, for 10 years, the last five as a regular general assignment metro columnist. She is a contributor to Al Jazeera America and her work has been published by Eater.com, the Oregonian, PBS.org among other publications.

Julia's has been recognized nationally with a number of awards for writing about culture and people, including the Scripps-Howard Ernie Pyle Award, a Casey Metal, a Darrell Sifford Memorial Award, the Mike Berger Award from Columbia University in 2014, and most recently, she was nominated for a James Beard Award for writing about food.

Julia is the incoming Atwood Chair of Journalism at the University of Alaska Anchorage. She is a graduate of Smith College.
