Usman Mahu was born on May 29, 1996, in Siwar, South Buru, a remote village on Ambalau Island, Maluku Province in Indonesia. He currently splits his time between television journalism and studying at the Usuludin and Da'wah Faculty of the State Islamic Institute (IAIN) in Ambon.

He interned at a local TV station, Molluca TV in Ambon City, while still in vocational school. He is also a contributor to web portals Tabaos.id and Titastory.id.

Mahu has been the recipient of several fellowships, including the EcoNusa fellowship, the COVID-19 Behavioral Change Program Press Council Fellowship, and the Pulitzer Center's Southeast Asia Rainforest Journalism Fund grant.
