The 2020 fire season in Amazonas, Brazil, is shaping up to be the largest since 1998, when the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) began monitoring fires in the Amazon. The government of Amazonas says it has taken measures to curb illegal practices since last June, but these efforts have been ineffective. Compared to 2019, one of the worst fire years in the region, the number of hot spots recorded in July increased by 33%. In August, there was an increase of 19%.

Experts estimate that, due to the deforestation rates that have already been detected, Amazonas still has a lot to burn this year. The most critical areas are located in the Southern part of the state, including the municipalities of Lábrea and Apuí. The region is becoming the new frontier of the arc of deforestation -- a new front for the environmental crisis in the region.
