Protus Onyango is a Kenyan journalist based in Nairobi. He has 10 years of experience working for Standard Media Group.

He writes about politics, science, development, health, education, agriculture, and the environment, with a focus on climate change.

His stories on socio-economic topics like land, water, and housing have led to policy reviews.

From 2019 to 2020, he was a Bertha fellow. He won the inaugural Bertha fellowship challenge sponsored by the U.K.-based Bertha Foundation.

Together with 16 fellows—including investigative journalists and activists—from South Africa, Tanzania, Nigeria, Morocco, the United Kingdom, Greece, Turkey, United States, India, Nepal, Northern Ireland, El Salvador, and Hungary, Onyango looked at how land and housing injustice can be solved.

His work has been published by The New York Times, Earth Journalism Network, Deutsche Welle TV’s Eco Africa, and Mongabay.

He studied media and ethnicity in Kenya at United States International University-Africa, and journalism at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communications.
