With a degree in public administration from FGV-SP, a business administration school in São Paulo, Brazil, Thaís Espinosa Alonso had her first encounter with Rondônia, Brazil, through a research project in 2015. There, she felt the power of the waters of Madeira River.

Many say that those who drink from this water will return someday. And that's exactly what happened. In 2017, she returned to Porto Velho and volunteered at NAPRA, an NGO in Brazil that helps riverside communities in the Amazon rainforest.

In 2019 she began a journalism career. At Amazônia Real, she reported on students from riverside communities who had spent more than nine months without school, the impact of wildfires, and several other issues.
