WHERE WE REPORT

First, trees are cut; then, large holes are excavated; and, finally, mercury is used to extract gold. What costs do these processes incur on people and the environment? How does the mercury made in Querétaro, Mexico, arrive at the mines of Madre de Dios in Peru? Where else does mercury come from?

This multimedia project unveils how mercury is being traded in the Amazon Forest. It is told in photos, video, and audio recordings which follow mercury through the world's largest rainforest.
