Webinars On-Demand: Southeast Asia Rainforest Journalism Fund Convening 2021

The 2021 Southeast Asia Rainforest Journalism Fund convening, which took place August 2-12, 2021, created an opportunity for environmental journalists in Southeast Asia to gather together to discuss the challenges, opportunities, and successes related to pitching environment stories, best practices for working with experts, and tips for how to collaborate with peers to cover important environmental issues.

Introductory Session

In this session, the Southeast Asia RJF advisory committee, regional coordinator, and colleagues from the Pulitzer Center introduce themselves and give a brief overview of the convening workshops.

Biodiversity and forests in Southeast Asia (Part I - Practitioner & Researcher Insights)

In this session, moderator Dyna Rochmyaningsih and speaker Dr. Ding Li Yong (Birdlife International Asia) discuss forest biodiversity.

Climate change and forests in Southeast Asia (Part I - Practitioner & Researcher Insights)

In this session, Yeb Saño, executive director, Greenpeace Southeast Asia, and Dr. Zeng Yiwen (NUS Centre for Nature-Based Climate Solutions), along with moderator Audrey Tan, address the role of forests in relation to climate change.

This session is moderated by Dyna Rochmyaningsih, Rhett Butler (Mongabay) and Yao Hua Law (Macaranga/Rainforest Investigations Network).

Remote Sensing and Journalism (Part I): Concepts and techniques for using satellite imagery and maps in rainforest reporting

In this session, Pulitzer Center Environment Investigations Editor Gustavo Faleiros outlines concepts and techniques for using satellite imagery and maps in rainforest reporting. The session focuses on the "environment" as a character — how to tell a story of a "place" using geographical data, satellite images and maps. Examples of good stories in the region and beyond. The webinar also explores sources of data and imagery, and how to use them in your own stories.

Remote Sensing and Journalism (Part II): Concepts and techniques for using satellite imagery and maps in rainforest reporting

In this session, Rainforest Investigations Network Data Editor Kuang Keng Kuek Ser discusses how to apply geospatial analysis with QGIS. The webinar is a beginner's training on how to manage files, create layers and analysis on open source mapping tool QGIS. Participants learn how to do simple filtering and analysis, besides creating their own maps.

Environmental investigations (Part I)

This session, moderated by Wahyu Dhyatmika (TEMPO/RJF Advisory Committee), includes Ian Yee (R.AGE/The Fourth/Environmental Reporting Collective/RJF Advisory Committee), Bagja Hidayat (TEMPO/Forest Digest/Rainforest Investigations Network Fellow), and Karol Ilagan (PCIJ/Rainforest Investigations Network Fellow) as speakers.

Presenters shared case studies that illustrate approaches to following money, paper, and people trails, and participants discussed how to apply different skills and tools to environmental investigations.

Environmental investigations (Part II)

In this follow-up session, Ian Yee (R.AGE/The Fourth/Environmental Reporting Collective/RJF Advisory Committee), Bagja Hidayat (TEMPO/Forest Digest/Rainforest Investigations Network Fellow), and Karol Ilagan (PCIJ/Rainforest Investigations Network Fellow), with moderator Wahyu Dhyatmika (TEMPO/RJF Advisory Committee), discuss how to assemble a team and decide on methods and approach. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about challenges, specific techniques or tools, etc. related to environmental investigations. Participants and discussants brainstorm entry points or ideas for new investigations related to forest/environment issues in Southeast Asia.
