Illegal logging in Nagari Paru, Sijunjung Regency, West Sumatra, has been going on for a long time. The Ban Rimbo, a protected forest that should not be disturbed, has become a target for loggers. Since the decades of 1970 and 1980, the roar of a chainsaw engine has been a common occurrence.

Sahirman, Datuak Gadang Jolelo, who was born and raised in Nagari Paru, remembers those days. As farmers and planters, the local community slowly began to understand the effects of losing trees around plantations or rice fields.
