Melissa Chan


Melissa Chan is a national and foreign affairs reporter based between Berlin and New York City. She frequently reports on China's impact beyond its borders, contributing to publications such as The Atlantic, TIME, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Foreign Policy, POLITICO, and others. Most recently, she spent a year working with The New York Times on projects focusing on technology's impact on democracies versus authoritarian states.

Earlier, she served as China correspondent for Al Jazeera English for five years before her expulsion from the country in 2012 for the channel's reports. She also worked for Al Jazeera America, focusing on stories from the rural American West. She has reported from around the world, from Cuba to North Korea, Mongolia to Gaza, and speaks Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese and Spanish. She is a graduate of Yale University and the London School of Economics.
