The Megawati Soekarnoputri Botanical Gardens cover an area of 221 hectares which was formerly occupied by the PT Newmont Minahasa Raya mine.

Messel Hill in Ratatotok, Southeast Minahasa, North Sulawesi, was reclaimed by PT Newmont Minahasa Raya (PT NMR), and this reclaimed forest later became the Megawati Soekarnoputri Botanical Gardens.

The vision behind the Megawati Soekarnoputri Botanical Garden is "to become the world's leading botanical garden in the field of conserving the Wallacea area for its sustainable use."
