WHERE WE REPORT

More than a year into the pandemic, the authorities, and even the media, have focused their attention on dealing with COVID-19, while overlooking other problems. This is how mining has gained ground in the Venezuelan Amazon, generating a significant destruction of the ecosystem and a negative impact on the health of the people who live there.

A team of three journalists living in Amazonas state, Venezuela, will investigate how the inhabitants of the communities near the gold and coltan mining areas have been affected by diseases caused by the contamination of mining: malaria, amebiasis, and vaginal and skin infections.

The four-episode podcast report seeks to explain the environmental risks, show the stories of the people affected, and highlight the deterioration of the Venezuelan public health system.
