Protecting the Forest Through Carbon Trading

Negara:

Penulis:

The five village communities in Bujang Raba share a remarkable achievement — they are the first communities in Indonesia to implement REDD +. Since receiving the village forest permit, these communities have formed a Village Forest Management Institution (LHPD) to manage a forest area of more than 7,000 hectares. Through LPHD, the main motor of forest rehabilitation programs is implemented, including customary regulations. Communities are allowed to use non-timber forest products. Based on Plan VIVO certification, the carbon stored in the Bujang Raba forest will reach 670.00 tonnes in 10 years.

As well as being community-based, corporate forest rehabilitation is also being undertaken, one of which is the Katingan Mentaya Project in Central Kalimantan, managed by PT Rimba Makmur Utama (RMU). The project manages forest and peatlands of more than 200,000 hectares or twice the size of Singapore. Initially, permits for forest restoration were not easy to obtain, and the main challenge faced is preventing land fires. PT RMU mobilizes resources and programs to empower communities and prevent forest and land fires.

To gain a better understanding of the issue of carbon trading, this project will showcase the personal perspectives of Jakartans who are aware of the carbon footprint that is being produced and are trying to buy carbon into it.

The documentary will be broadcast on CNN Indonesia.
